DANIEL A. SORENSEN
LAWYER AND PARTNER
Having grown up in Chilliwack, BC, Daniel has strong local roots in the Fraser Valley. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Political Science from the University of Victoria in 2003. Following this, Daniel spent a year interning with non-profits, and eventually worked as a Youth Liaison for Elections BC encouraging young people to vote. In 2008 Daniel obtained his law degree from the University of Victoria. He was admitted to the bar in British Columbia in 2009.
After finishing law school, Daniel worked with a law firm in the Fraser Valley gaining experience in numerous practice areas, before starting Sorensen Smith LLP in 2014.
EXPERIENCE
Daniel is an experienced litigator. He has represented clients at various levels of court and before numerous administrative bodies. His work has included representing clients before WorkSafeBC, the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal, the Employment Standards Branch, the BC Human Rights Tribunal, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, the Labour Relations Board, the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board and the Residential Tenancy Branch.
In his practice, Daniel strives to find creative, cost-effective resolutions for his clients and he has assisted numerous clients with mediations, arbitrations and out-of-court settlements. Employment law represents a large part of Daniel’s practice. He has successfully represented both employers and employees on a wide variety of matters.
Daniel regularly advises business owners on matters including collections, contracts, leases, insurance matters and business disputes.
He has also assisted clients who hold judgements outside British Columbia with the registration and recognition of their judgments within British Columbia.
PRACTICE
In his litigation practice, Daniel has experience handling a broad spectrum of matters such as:
- Builder’s liens
- Construction issues
- Commercial contract disputes
- Insurance claims
- Foreclosures
- Real estate and strata disputes.
IN THE COMMUNITY
Daniel is a past Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley, and currently sits on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley. He is also a past President of the Chilliwack Bar Association. He has also volunteered his time contributing to and reviewing the scripts and information provided by the Canadian Bar Association’s Dial-A-Law service. Beyond this, Daniel has authored articles and content for the People’s Law School. Daniel is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia; the Canadian Bar Association and the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia.
Daniel enjoys exploring the great outdoors. In his spare time, you will often find him hiking and photographing landscapes. Daniel lives with his wife, Yuri. They are both foodies. It’s not unusual to find Daniel and Yuri checking out new restaurants and trying new foods. Additionally, Daniel is an avid traveler and loves exploring.
